| Born in 1958, Jan Gauthier studied photo-journalism at San Francisco State University and was that department's first female graduate. Gauthier looks to her immediate surroundings in the environs of West Marin County for her subject matter, primarily still life and landscape imagery. She achieves a unique atmosphere by treating traditional silver gelatin prints with a variety of bleaches and toners. She further enhances the surface by hand painting each image with oil based pigments and wax. Through this process Gauthier captures more than a still life or a landscape, but an atmospheric mood that is unique to her body of work. |
