Ricardo Mazal      Ricardo Mazal: New Paintings

June 5, 2003 - July 5, 2003
Elins Eagles-Smith Gallery is pleased to present our first solo exhibition of New York based painter Ricardo Mazal.

Born in Mexico in 1950 Mazal studied painting in Barcelona Spain from 1985 to 1991 and has lived in New York City since 1991. He is the receipient of the 1999 FONCA award from The Systema Nacional de Creadores de Arte in Mexico and in 2000 had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey,(MARCO), Monterrey Mexico.

Ricardo Mazal's work explores the process of visual perception as it takes form within human consciousness. His paintings depict the passage of time, not by illustrating passing events but by leaving their residue to dissipate in space like a blurred photograph of a speeding object.

Mazal is part of a growing number of painters who are pushing the boundries of traditional painting techniques. He works by applying and wiping away numerous layers of paint with horizontal and vertical pulls of long foam rubber blades. He achieves a variety of textures and veiled layers of information by constantly changing the pressure,  velocity and paint load of each gesture.  The viewers eye easily slips through the parted seams that form from where one stroke ends and another begins, and explores each successive layer underneath.
