John McCormick     Above & Below, New Landscape Paintings

November 4, 2004 - December 31, 2004
John McCormick is a Bay Area artist that has distinguished himself with his refined landscapes and drawings.  He combines elements of Modernism with those of traditional painting and excels at the craft of painting, the alchemy of rendering form, and the modulation of hue and tone.

His paintings are a subjective response to nature and are an intersection of observation and intuition. “The resilience of the imagery speaks to the recognition that landscapes are culture before they are nature; they are constructs of the imagination projected onto earth, water and woods.” Among his sources of inspiration are mythology, dreams, travel,  and art history.  His paintings are not a documentation of nature.  They demonstrate a process of engagement and meditation on experience.

Among the recent venues that John McCormick has exhibited his work are the Triton Museum of Art, and the United States Embassy in Moscow.  In 2002 he was invited to be a resident artist at The Morris Graves Foundation in Northern California. McCormick just had a solo exhibition at the Bolinas Museum of Art that ended on August 22, 2004.  His work is collected both nationally and internationally.
